Chapter 6
Mandy
Chase insisted on picking me up early for the rodeo tonight and he's been holding my hand all the way into town. He's so much more relaxed now that Emily is gone.
Emily tried to overstay her welcome and was not hiding the fact that she'd be okay with him sneaking into her cabin last night. But he was great at setting boundaries and made it clear he had someone else, even though he never said it was me. I know he meant me and that's all that matters.
She sat next to him at dinner and was so close a good sneeze would have landed her in his lap. I had a good laugh with Birch and Jericho over it at dinner. When I was introduced to Jericho, we bonded instantly, being the only sane women in the room. So I'm looking forward to hanging out with her tonight.
As we get into town, he pulls into a western store and has a huge smile on his face. I'm not sure what he's here for, but he holds my hand all the way inside and one of the sales associates greets us.
"How are you all today? Are we looking for anything in particular that I can help you find?" She asks us in her sweet-as-pie bubbly voice.
"Yes, I'd like to get my girl here a pair of proper boots. She's never had a pair before so she will need to be sized," he says.
At his words, my jaw drops. I don't know what to address first. The fact that he called me his girl or the fact that he's planning on getting me a very not cheap pair of boots. My mind can't seem to decide, but my feet follow him as he goes with the sales associate to the back of the store.
She sits me down on a bench and takes measurements of my foot.
"You don't need to do this..." I say as my mind starts working again.
"I know I don't, but I want to. You need a good pair of boots, not only for around the ranch but for tonight too. It's a safety issue. Can't have you breaking your pretty little ankle." He shoots me the flirtiest wink that seems to short-circuit my brain yet again.
"Okay, what style do you like?" The sales associate says once she is done with measurements.
I have no idea where to start, so I look back at Chase hoping for a bit of guidance.
"Let's get her a pair of traditional work boots, but something pretty too that she can wear out," he says.
I follow them both down a few aisles where she takes me to a brand he seems to recognize. Most of them are brown, which works in hiding dirt, I would guess. Looking at all the boots, I am drawn to a brown pair with sunflowers up the side.
"I think we have a winner," Chase says.
"Okay, I will go grab those in her size and be right back," the sales associate says.
